The Aerial Ropeway owes it’s existence to the fact that the Royal Navy needed to build a new hospital and sanatorium, the old hopsital having been in use since 1810 and 1812. The chosen location was on top of the mountain in Simon’s Town, which was the Naval Station for the Royal Navy at that time.
